User Story Exercise

  • • A user story is a short description of a product or feature.

    • Told from the perspective of a person who wants that product or feature.

    • Told as a potential and/or existing user of a product or service.

    Defines the product backlog in Agile development workflow. Drives functionality and specifications for the development of features for a product or service.

    “As a (user) I want a (feature) so that I can (satisfy a need)”

    Examples:
    • As a Sailor, I want a better way to reduce wood rot on my ship, so I can get more mileage from my ship.

    • As a Warrior, I want better peripheral vision from my helmet but yet be adequately armored.

    • As a Seige Weapon Architect, I want a more durable form of material to draw up time-intensive construction plans that doesn’t degrade easily.

  • The Lord of the Rings Trilogy is most certainly an epic but what we’re talking about is a very large and broad user story, which consists of a few or many smaller user stories.

    Example:
    As a king, I want to have many sons, so I can ensure my bloodline as supreme ruler.

    This is an Epic.

    Underneath this, there are multiple, smaller user stories.

    • As a farmer for my king, I want ample farmlands to grow food for my king so they will not starve

    • As a moat designer for my king, I want to utilize gray water to efficiently supply water to the farmer’s crops

    • As the royal physician, I want to make sure my king is healthy and in good shape, so they can propagate effectively

    • As the royal bodyguard, I want a great fighting studio on-prem, so I ensure the safety of my king

Create a fictional product and create user stories from an epic.

    Wants and Needs:
    Want to see a happy place once in his life.

    Castle Invidia
    Indentured servant, non-conformist, thinks castles are a waste of resources and space.

    Frustrations:
    Currently captured, hoping to escape at the next coup-d’etat, or try to get smuggled out.

    Wants and Needs:
    Loves cave trolls and wants to one day see a live troll in their habitat.

    ”I remember drawings of cave trolls in the cave I was born in, and ever since I was captured I never had a chance to see them in real life.”

  • Count Macey D'Lyons

    Age: 19
    South Ocean, Isle of Hound
    Aspiring Bard, Lives with a tamed 750-pound hydra and thinks castles are totally overrated.

    Frustrations:
    People assume that all water hydras will kill humans on sight. Not true he says.

    Wants and Needs:
    Wants to take a nice vacation at a hydra-friendly destination. Will need a porter to help carry the livestock of chickens to feed his pet.
